Ximending Shopping Area

The development of Ximending shopping area makes the street food there so popular and many nice restaurants gather accordingly. Because of its long history, Ximending is one of the most popular tourist spots in Taipei, and its street food is famous at home and abroad. In addition to Japanese magazine stores, there are also stores selling Japanese books, records and clothes, etc. It is a paradise for the so-called “Harajuku”. Besides independent shops on the street, many other shops are concentrated in several complexes, including the old but famous ones - Wannian Mansion, Lions’ Plaza Commercial Building and Shinjuku Plaza, and the new one - Eslite Spectrum Store.

Ximen The Red House

The Red House incorporates an octagonal main structure and a cruciform building to the rear of the main structure. Initially, The Red House was a small venue for art performances, run by the nonprofit Paper Windmill Arts Foundation. However, the contract expired on Sep. 30, 2007. In November 2007, the Taipei Culture Foundation took over the management. In 2008, it was awarded The 7th Urban Landscape Award in Historical Space Redevelopment Category. With its goal of promoting cultural and creative industries, The Red House kept breathing life into these industries in the western part of Taipei. In August 2008, a teahouse was introduced to The Red House, selling tea and refreshments in the octagonal building and providing tourists with the opportunity to experience Taiwan’s tea culture in a historic site. In the cruciform building, the front of it is known as “16 Creative Boutique”, which was divided into 16 small creative workshops for local designers’ brands; the rear of it is run by Live House, which regularly invites indie bands to play live music.

Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle

While hitting the bustling streets of Ximending, you can always see crowds of people standing around in the street with bowls of flour rice noodles. Get close to the crowds and you’ll find there’s a famous “standing restaurant”, Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle! It’s been more than 30 years since its foundation. Ay-Chung’s noodles are served with vermicelli, dark vinegar, cilantro and oysters, etc. Due to the restaurateur’s diligence, you can smell the delicious noodles from meters away. No wonder many people come to have a taste despite having to stand in the street.

Lautianlu Braised Dishes

Lautianlu in Wuchang street, which has been open for more than fifty years, is famous for its braised dishes. It’s a necessary snack for Taipei people while shopping and seeing a movie in Ximending. Today, the old and famous Lautianlu Braised Dishes is also the favorite for foodies in Taiwan and Hong Kong, having already become a specialty of Ximending area.
